WWRY Auditions

Today consisted of the auditions for the students next production of "We Will Rock You". Each student had to individually find a suitable monologue and also sing a song from the production.

The students did OK for this audition but did lack in some aspects.

When it came to the students performing their monologues for some reason they brought in the script that they have been using to learn the monologue but also reading from it within the audition. If this was an audition for a professional production the student would be asked to leave the room and could also be noted down for this. That would then affect work in the future.

One student In particular auditioned but wished not to sing. Although this student did sing one line at the end of his monologue. This let myself and my mentor hear that the student could potentially have a great singing voice. Ask we discussed that this student could be eligible for a lead role, we asked him to go away and learn a new monologue.

We decided not to tell him that we will ask him to sing a number from this musical, just in case he did not return. When he returned at the end of the auditions we treat it as a normal audition and heard his new monologue. We then asked him to sing. The student did not want to sing but because we convinced him he changed his mind. After the song all tutors on the panel were amazed at this student as we have not heard him sing before because of this we decided to give him the lead role.

This is a good example of a humanistic approach as we will be rewarding the student that would give him a positive attitude and have the satisfaction of gaining a lead role for the first time. We are hoping this positive attitude will stick throughout the rehearsals as we would love for him to develop his singing and acting skills.
